Neon has historically been the most common way of lighting outdoor electric signage. It has the ability to be made in many shapes, unlike incandescents and has a long life which lends it towards permanent installations.
While there are some situations where Neon adds a unique look to a sign, like signs that have exposed neon within their lettering, it is no longer the preferred technology for internally lighting enclosed signs or letters. Of course it will be around for a long time because many companies have invested a lot of time, capital and equipment into their ability to produce neon signs and are not able or willing to change. There are also many legacy signs in use that will continue to need repair and maintenance, although those are being upgraded to LED’s in some cases.
The other situation where Neon is still a good option is if you want a bright, pure white color in your channel letters. While white LED’s do exist, they are not as bright as the other colors. Generally we do not recommend a white sign with white LED’s.
While Neon may have had it’s day in the channel letter business, it still is an excellent, eye-catching tool for indoor and window displays. In fact we strongly suggest that all our retail clients purchase a stock or custom neon window sign to attract a lot more attention. Those are available at excellent prices at www.portland-neon.com .
